" We must remember that one man is much
the same as another, and he is best
who is trained in the severest school "
Thucydides: History of the Peloponnesian War
Hanshi is an aggressive defender of freedom and peace. This leadership style is infused into everything that the DAIMAS ACADEMY does to train others to enjoy peace in a world of terrorism and violence. He has been said to say, "whether you believe it or not, there are bad people in our world who do very bad things to people-strangers, friends, and even to family members. Their habit is violence and you cannot even see it oft times until it is too late. Are you prepared if you are the chosen target?"
The best training is the right training, with the right mindset, with the right tools, for the right mission, for the right objectives, and for the right reasons. If you do not train as close to the reality of battle as possible then your skills will not be ready for the split-second moment that battle is joined.
RIGHT REASON
There should be no reason to engage in battle with another human being unless you are forced to it. Logic and personal feelings should tell you when this moment is upon you but most often without the right training it will not. Only the right training will tell you when you are terminally threatened and the time you must act. Other than the right training most people overreact or underreact to the situation. This even includes the modern warrior class of military and police.
RIGHT OBJECTIVE
You are forced to it! Some bad person is choosing you. What do you do? You win no matter what. The best way to win is to observe through situational awareness a life threatening situation materializing and then you must escape and evade the violence. There is nothing in the rule book that says you must stay and fight....unless it is your sworn duty to put yourself in harms way.
You can't get out! You were less observant, distracted perhaps. You win again by employing sound, practiced, trained skills that have been honed as close to this reality as possible. Execute your skill to precision. Stop the threat....and then escape and evade to safety.
RIGHT MISSION
It is always prudent to be where you are suppose to be. If you frequent bad places then it is more likely to experience bad situations. You must be an active participant in your own safety. Police cannot be everywhere. Most violence happens within minutes, if not seconds. You must be present in your own safety and survival., not looking for someone else to save you. The mission is survival no matter what. You must live! There are people depending on you. You have responsibility to yourself, your family, your offspring (if you are single), your society, your nation. You must live!
RIGHT TOOL
To use a hammer when you are trying to put a wood screw in is not applying wisdom in your situation. Get a screw driver! Well, there are many people; for example, who practice the martial arts for the purpose of learning skills for their defense. This is like using the hammer as described above. The modern martial arts does not work for the reality of meeting real violence. It is the wrong tool for the job.
If you are attacked by a person wielding a bladed tool, to meet this violence with a bladed tool yourself is not applying wisdom in this situation. If you are attacked by someone applying violence with their empty hands, then it is prudent to use the right tool to get the job done right.
RIGHT MINDSET
This right mindset is more important than any physical application. In fact, whatever your mindset, so goes the battle. The wrong mindset, even if you have the right tool, does not guarentee your mission and objective will be attained successfully. The reverse is also true. Having the right mindset, even if you do not have the right tool, will still get the job done if you have the right training.
RIGHT TRAINING
Hanshi always says to "train the way you fight." At DAIMAS, we train "to standard." What this means is we crawl, walk, and then run. We work from the objective back to the tool. We work from the mindset out to the skill. Once skill is learned we put it into practice as close to the reality of the situation in which it will be needed. We work in the environments in which the skills and tools will be applied.
PAST TRAINING THOUGHTS FROM HANSHI
"I look at myself as more of a gatekeeper of self-preservation truths, than as an instructor. However, I realize I am the one instructing you during this course. Self-preservation, Self-defense, hand-to hand, unarmed combat, close combat, blade fighting or whatever pretty words you use to discribe battle is not what is important about our courses. The gut instincts of the human body to survive no matter what, is more important than all the physical technique that you can learn. And, yes, there are better techniques, than others, but it's not the technique itself that is good or bad, it's the man, women, youth, and child and how they employ their tools of battle. This suggests that you have to use your brain to school your body in those techniques that work for you. There is no other way. I firmly believe that there is only one style of combat, that style is you. All the other names are not necessary, however, I also come from a martial system lineage. I have also been in the military as a LRRP (Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol Soldier), Airborne and all that motivating, adrenalin charged HOOWAH! I know the importance of labels and the power they carry. Without a name, it would be hard for people to identify with me, Tyron J. Cunningham, and so forth. But our courses are not about style, names or anything of the sort. It's about pure close quarters defense. The stuff all warriors alike have needed to stay alive. I hope you enjoy the course. Learn from it and drive on with it. Also!! If I talk harsh I will apologize now. I will talk strait. No hidden martial art mysteries, just human guts sprinkled with techniques."
"I don't separate the battle operating system from the tools we teach, whether that is through the hand, blade, blunt, or bullet employment. We teach one BOS for the individual student and based on the mission, threat, terrain, available support, time, citizen considerations will depend on the tools that are employed. In other words, it doesn't matter what course you attend you learn the same BOS or foundational skills. These skills apply universally to all tool application courses and comply with the almost four decades of my hoplological studies contained in the science of human combative behavior and performance."
"Remember, that any tool is dead until it is placed into the skillset of the user. Years ago I came up with the phrase "the blade must cut." This is a true statement. Until humans required the need of something sharp to apply to many situations, the blade was not invented. The "cut" was a requirement prior to the invention and production of a sharp instrument or "blade." I have never seen a blade jump off a table to cut someone. It took the mind of the user to apply the blade to the objective required. This brings in behavior and thus performance."
"In a defensive situation, the tool you select does not do the defending; you must employ the tool for that purpose. The tool can do nothing other than be used according to your minds will with the performance of your body to reach the objective of your mind: your defense and survival. The creation of the tool is all the training the tool needs to exist. The creation of your BOS is all that is required for you to employ any tool toward your objective to defend and therefore survive. After your BOS is developed and honed your BOS must be trained in each tools efficient operation. That is not BOS, however, that is training in the mechanics of tool operation, so that that tool can be exposed to your BOS and therefore your only weapon - your mind."
"I know that is a mouth full, but based on my experience, it is truth. The one take-away before I see you in training at one of DAIMAS courses is in the form of a question: How much do you value your life? You would not be reading this if you didn't care "gravely,"(no pun intended) about your life! I got it! See you in training."
DAIMAS TRAINING
DAIMAS designs courses to enhance a person's capabilities in scout tracking, survival, and defense. All training is aimed at making the individual competent and capable in these areas. DAIMAS training is designed to enhance the normal reactions and capabilities that have evolved with the human experience. Rather than attempting to learn impractical skills that will breakdown under the inherent stress of defensive survival situations, DAIMAS aims at enhancing instinctive personal attributes that have progressed in mankind to respond in battle and the inherent stresses involved. That core BOS model of instruction is combined with training in various operating tools (hand, blade, blunt, and bullet).
Having an adversary (one or many) is the core feature of all battle. In surviving a battle, there are two components that must be mastered in order to compete in the circle of life (life and death struggle). FIRST: optimal performance of skill (physical techniques with all tools) and SECOND: honed behavior in response (dealing with the natural bodies handling of stress when under violent attack).
All performance success or failure is based on behavioral success. You must be able to handle the stresses of battle. This means situational saturation. All DAIMAS courses emphasize battle drills. In these drills, you will be able to face your instincts head-on. At first you will feel overwhelmed, confused, even scared. This is good, everyone, starts here in the BOS model. It cannot be escaped. Through constant drilling under the watchful eye of competent warrior instructors you will be attacked in a variety of situations under varying circumstances that will allow your BOS to seat itself deep within your neural memory. You will crawl through each situation, then walk through, and finally you will be executing at what is known as combat speed which is the run phase. A sound and competent BOS is tempered physically and psychologically simulatneously through DAIMAS training.
Hanshi reminds all DAIMAS students that "the only weapon is the MIND and this weapon is what is paramount to success in training and on the battlefields of life. You should be able to pick up any tool from a newspaper to a firearm and employ it effectively within your BOS."
